Salt marsh carbon dynamics

pieSalt marshes are among the most productive ecosystems on earth. Situated at the interface of land and sea, they control nutrient and carbon exchange with the estuary while accreting sediment and carbon. At the Plum Island LTER, we measure the net ecosystem vertical and lateral exchange to estimate the resilience of the salt marsh facing rising sea levels.

Methane emissions in boreal peatlands

salmisuoPeatlands are a major natural source of methane that are susceptible to climatic and hydrological changes. During my PhD field work, I measured methane emissions in a Finnish mire using chamber, eddy covariance to quantify small- and ecosystem scale contributions. The small-scale heterogeneity has to be considered in process-based models for upscaling to the region.
